ASSISTED SUICIDE: LEGAL ISSUES AND CURRENT CONTROVERSIES

Summary/Abstract: In recent decades, ending life on demand by methods such as assisted suicide or euthanasia is a controversy, both legally, religiously or socially. Opinions are often divided, with each side advocating for their own beliefs. Throughout this paper we will analyze the subject of assisted suicide from an objective perspective, analyzing on one hand the actual situation, determining the reasons why the cessation of life on demand is not only a useful procedure, but also necessary in certain situations, and on the other hand the state of law, the legislative regulations of different European countries. This paper aims to analyze the assisted suicide procedure from a legal and sociological point of view, aiming to understand and maintain a holistic perspective. In the first part of the paper, we will define the key concepts, necessary in expanding the concept of cessation of life on demand and the contemporary social perspective on the phenomenon. We will then look at the legislation in several countries to make a comparative analysis of the legislation on assisted suicide. In the final part of the paper, we will present the constitutional implications for assisted suicide and debate the right of people to resort to this procedure. As we observed during our research on the subject, the concept of physician assisted suicide or euthanasia has legal implications all over the globe, in a contemporary world in full development, but, in the fairly distant future, it would rather be legally possible to implement such an idea.
