Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to examine the scale on which enterprises use the risk insurance retention technique, and an attempt to identify the factors which determine its level. Particular attention has been paid to the description of motives for selection between insurance and risk retention. The survey has been conducted on a representative sample of medium-sized and large enterprises which operate in Poland. ...mpirical analysis has covered a broad sample of enterprises representative for the whole country (without concentration on a given sector of the economy or specific type of insurance), which, according to the authors, makes it possible to extrapolate the results on the whole population. The verification of the research hypotheses put forward has been conducted by examining whether the individual independent variables (grouping variables) divide the population into similar groups due to a specific dependent variable. The median test and Kruskal-Wallis test have been used, which are non-parametric alternatives to one-way analysis of variance ANOVA, and are used to compare three or more independent groups in a situation in which qualitative features measured on the ordinal scale are examined. As a result of the examinations conducted, it has been concluded that the most important reason for retention is a high loss ratio at the enterprise, due to which insurance companies refuse to provide cover, or propose insurance conditions which are difficult to meet. The second mostimportant reason for resignation from insurance and choosing self-financing of the risk is a high cost connected with implementation of insurance audit’s recommendations. The other reasons for choos- ing retention are: shorter loss adjustment time and expectations about compensation payment, lower cost as compared to the insurance premium, too high insurance policy price.
