Summary/Abstract: An insurance policy is a document confirming a contract between an insurance company and its customer. Insurance in Europe - including on Polish soil - has a long tradition dating back to the 18th-century fire funds. After the partitions, there were about 30 insurance companies in the Second Republic, mostly in the form of joint stock companies. The text presents, on the basis of informants, a dozen characteristic insurance companies offering about 10 different forms of insurance in those years, but mainly in the fields of fire protection, liability and health. For example, selected insurance companies issued policies for about 100 million zlotys in premiums and covered about 45 million zlotys in claims paid out. There were several thousand insurance policies in circulation at the time, diverse in content and form. These policies are an interesting historical documentation of the currencies, interest rates, scale of risk at that time, including graphic forms. As an attractive subject for collectors, they appear on the antiquarian market.
