Summary/Abstract: The human right to use all that nature has given him during his existence, what previous generations have created in the course of evolution, seemed, until recently, a full right, unaffected by other limitations or conditionings than those of material, physical and geographical nature. However, the industrial evolution and the accelerated development of science and technology over the last century, against the backdrop of man's desire to benefit from more and more facilities and material abundance, have led to imbalances in the environment. The disruption of the environment through unconscious human action first occurred in isolated ways, punctually, locally, and then, over time, increased in regional and even global, planetary manifestations. Thus, the desertification of large areas, prolonged drought, extreme weather phenomena manifested by increasingly high annual temperatures, devastating storms, large-scale fires which regularly destroy thousands of hectares of forest, floods caused by rivers bursting their banks and landslides, the destruction of human settlements, the infestation of waters with physical or chemical pathogens, and the disappearance of hundreds of species of terrestrial and marine plants and animals are realities which we can no longer ignore. The major changes in the environment, caused by what is generically called pollution, oblige states and regional and international organisations, united by the need to manage the new realities, to act effectively by adopting policies and measures to protect, preserve and regenerate the environment to achieve the development of today's society while respecting the right of future generations to inherit a healthy and balanced environment from all points of view. The only way to give future generations a real right to life is to protect nature now, otherwise, we will not only make our living conditions worse, but we will pass on to our descendants a toxic legacy, a ruin, which they will not be able to refuse or demand the liquidation of unwanted debts.
