THE CENTENARY OF THE BAPTIST CHORAL MOVEMENT IN TIMISOARA (1923-2023)

Summary/Abstract: On November 5, 2023, a century of existence and service of the Mixed Choir of the Baptist Church No. 1 Betel in Timișoara was celebrated. The cultural-religious event brought together personalities of the Banat musical-choral life, representatives of cultural and concert institutions from Timișoara, choir conductors, representatives of artistic vocational education institutions as well as believers, former and current choristers. A history of the Choir was presented which merges with the history of the Baptist movement in Timișoara. So, from the beginning, the newly formed Church understood the importance of choral music as a stylistic as well as congregational singing (also called common singing). The choir and choral singing fulfilled the role of a backbone in the community, preserving the rigor, the discipline of worship and a complex community education, the choir constituting the central and stable group of the Church - the essence of the community. Although religious and sacred music takes many forms, the power of the choir in a church is huge, making a significant impact. It elevates choir members to musical and spiritual heights, opens windows to heaven, and lets worship and praise flow to God's throne of glory. In a choir it is not about "me" but about "us", and in church choral singing it is not about "us" but about "He-God".
