Summary/Abstract: Doina is a musical genre that has been continually exposed to the attention of researchers, cultured people, folklore performers (interpreters). This genre has developed in a period of intense pastoralism, being created on the basis of an ancient native fund, differentiating itself over the centuries on a regional level, depending on social, local, economic and developmental conditions, going through many distinct evolutionary layers that could be seen in the ballad also. Constantin Brăiloiu arranges the evolutionary layers from archaic to classical to „love“ because, in their entirety, they can all be considered as traditional. Usually singed individually, „for oneself“, because the act of performance involves a state of strong soul experience and profound internalization, the doina is characterized musically by lyrical, recto-tono recitations but also by broad melodic-rhythmic cantabile formulas. This type of recitative is also found in other lyrical genres: blues, bridal songs, certain songs belonging to the calendar cycle, as well as in the incantations of the „zgherb“, but doina is different from them by function, belonging to a particular category.
