Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzes visual material used in selected educational systems to study German as a foreign language in Bulgaria. The basic functions of images as visual media, on the one hand, and as a means of communication in a foreign language, on the other, are considered. The hypothesis is based on the claim that there has been a significant change in the way images are used in foreign language teaching of German. The article is part of a study about the competency-based approach in foreign language learning, in which individual components are analyzed in order to establish how and to what extent they are integrated into the educational systems of German as a foreign language within the framework of the modern educational paradigm.
