Summary/Abstract: The ex-Yugoslavia and the region as a whole have a long tradition of the workers’ migrations. Furthermore, one could recognize even two different traditions in that regard: the tradition of the territories that belonged to Austro-Hungary, and the other of the ex-Ottoman lands. The first tradition fits the migration patterns of the Central and Eastern Europe. This migration was directed toward both Americas, and was more or less, permanent emigration. In the Adriatic hinterland, the number of emigrants who went to America reached up to 15% of the total population (Banović,1987:321)
