Summary/Abstract: The publication discusses the liquidation of slavery on the territory of the Principality of Bulgaria after the Liberation. It follows the fundamental theoretical debate in the Constituent Assembly and the subsequent constitutional text, underscoring the differences in the views of the main political trends and figures. Against the backdrop of the continuing practice of slave ownership and trade in the Ottoman Empire there is an outline of the consistent efforts of Bulgarian society and its state not to permit the resumption of this practice and to buy back the Bulgarians sold into slavery at the end of the 19th century.
