ONE OF THE LAST REPRESENTATIVES OF BAB-I ÂLI ILLUSTRATORS: CEMAL AKYILDIZ

Summary/Abstract: Born in Trabzon in 1932, Cemal Akyıldız started to work in Babıali, the heart of the press and media world, in 1950. Producing numerous works as an illustrator and calligrapher, Akyıldız has had a rich artistic life, ranging from being a Babıali illustrator to a Presidential Artist. Akyıldız is known as the painter of important architectural structures of Turkish history and Atatürk portraits in Anatolia, the Balkans and Central Asia. His most visible work, which he calls his trademark, is the portrait of Atatürk, which was used in primary school report cards for many years. Unfortunately, there is no information about Akyıldız, who has left many valuable works on Turkish culture and art by doing such important works, in the scientific literature. For this reason, the limitation of this research is that the literature review has to be made from video recordings, newspapers and news websites. With the understanding that "the word flies, the writing remains", the purpose of this study is not only to examine Akyıldız's artistic life and to ensure that it is included in the scientific literature; it is also a debt of loyalty to the last Babıali illustrator of our graphic design history, who passed away quietly with the COVID19 Pandemic.
