Summary/Abstract: The following article presents Stefania Ciesielska-Borkowska’s views on teaching foreign languages and the benefits of learning modern languages. Professor Stefania Ciesielska-Borkowska, a proponent of the direct method, was ahead of her time when proposing concepts valid in the contemporary methodology and applicable to modern language instruction. She emphasized the role of individualization of teaching, the use of visual aids, practising correct pronunciation. She noticed the difference between language learning and language acquisition, which was dealt with by Stephen D. Krashen many years later. In her opinion, learning modern languages allows an individual to understand the way people think. An educated person is more tolerant and open to other nations.
