Summary/Abstract: The main Coptic historical source for describing the persecution of Christians by Muslims in the early Islamic state is the History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria. Reading this work allows us to realize how complicated the conditions were for the representatives of the then Coptic hierarchy to operate. I decided to divide this text into two parts. The first will concern the cases of persecution, which can be considered a manifestation of the political line of the Muslim authorities, an element of the institutional activities of the representatives of the Caliphate in Egypt. The second section discusses the actions of Muslim administration officials against the Copts, which were rather the result of the situations and characters of the individual heroes of the events, rather than orders from Damascus or Fustat. It is important to note that the chronological framework of this contribution is based on the reign of the Umayyad and Abbasid governors in Egypt, from the takeover of power by the Marwanid line of the Umayyad dynasty to the relative independence of Egypt under the rule of the Tulunids.
