Origins of the University of Lithuania: Archival Testimonies in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences

Summary/Abstract: The Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, especially the Manuscripts Department, is rich in material revealing the origins of the founding of the University of Lithuania, established in Kaunas in 1922. The documents preserved here testify to the activities of such predecessors of the University as the Lithuanian Scientific Society, the Vilnius and Kaunas Higher Courses. There is also material on the conception and structure of the Higher Education Courses, their lecturers, the subjects taught, the problems of the organisation of higher education of public interest, as well as on the founding of the University of Lithuania in Kaunas in 1922, and the subsequent development. The archival documents provide a more detailed insight into the origins of the higher education institution; they testify to the contribution of individual personalities to the establishment of the university, and they show the process by which the university was established in the nascent state. The aim is to present and disclose the documents kept in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences related to the establishment of the University of Lithuania.
