Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate what kinds of language narratives build up the identity of those intellectuals belonging to an ethnic minority who actively and regularly use their minority language. The objects of this comparison are five Finno-Ugric minorities: Meänkieli, Kven, Sámi, the Transylvanian Hungarians and the Csángós. The research focuses upon their use of the language, their approach to it, as well as the social and cultural factors that affect these. Although the compared minorities are very different in terms of their political, historical and cultural backgrounds, the most important common narratives are, for example, that multilingualism means profuseness, still one’s own minority language should have a special place as part of their cultural heritage; many a time, school is the place of language loss.
