On Central Europe and the Translatability of its Literatures

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the concept of Central Europe and the translatability of its literatures, highlighting the similarities in theoretical approaches between the two fields of research and, in the case of Central European literatures, the characteristics of their translation in the light of discourses on Central Europe. While the existence (or non-existence) of Central Europe can only be discussed on the basis of theoretical texts, the translation of its literatures should be approached from a practical perspective. The second part of this paper, as an introduction to a detailed analysis, remains at the theoretical level, abstracted from practice and at the same time confirming practice. It examines the theoretical background of the specific demands for the translation of Central European literatures, implicitly or explicitly expressed in Central European discourses, primarily through a further reflection on the vessel-fragments theory of Walter Benjamin’s essay The Task of the Translator.
