(according to Homily for the Resurrection of the Lord pronounced by tsar Simeon on the 25 th of March, 927 in the Patriarchal Church “Holy Mother of God” in Preslav)

Summary/Abstract: The study is part of a larger work devoted to the Preslav culture and history. It presents the relations between Preslav and Constantinople in a new way without overly trusting the Byzantine chronicles. In the same manner it analyzes the historical events and the struggle of tsar Simeon to be an actual emperor. The representation of the Bulgarian ruler as a “high priest” (“extraneous bishop of the church”) finds its expression in the pronounced Homily for the Resurrection of the Lord by Simeon (Cyriopasha) in 927. The emperor of Constantinople has the same right according to Rule 69 of the Sixth Ecumenical council. Therefore, the recognition of Simeon’s rights as emperor is attested in the archpresbyter liturgy of tsar Simeon on Cyriopasha. This corresponds with the ambitions of the Bulgarian ruler towards the Byzantine empire.
