Summary/Abstract: Among the Balkan nations, in particular the Bulgarian, Romanian, and Serbian, it is only the Bulgarian nation that the Italians have a stereotypical image of, quite often carrying a negative connotation. There are no specific reasons for such a pejorative attitude, but the ethnonym ‘bulgaro’ forms several stable collocations or is used for the formation of words with a negative semantics. In general, the toponyms and anthroponyms containing the stem bulgaro are devoid of connotation; there are no stable collocations in the Italian language that express prejudice against Serbs or Romanians.
