Summary/Abstract: This paper poses the question of relations between correct and incorrect interpretations and view of „the Other“ on the examples of some thoughts on Serbian language, written by Giuseppe Barbanti Brodano. In1876, Barbanti came to Serbia as a volunteer of the Garibaldine legion, to fight on the Serbian side against Turks. However, his wish to help quickly transformed into being impressed by Serbian culture, which Barbanti demonstrated especially by getting interested in the Serbian language. But some of his thoughts on language are based on his limited research opportunities, on existing stereotypes, as well as on some false information he possibly received from the Serbs themselves. The conclusion is that these stereotyped and only partially correct interpretations are also important for studying alterity, and that the author’s intentions to introduce the broader Italian audience to a foreign nation is laudable, despite of the mistakes we point out.
