Indulgences as a Real Help in Life Transformation

Summary/Abstract: The teaching on indulgences belongs to the official teaching of the Catholic Church. The Apostolic constitution Indulgentiarum doctrina of Pope St. Paul VI from 1967 has been an impulse for further reflections on history, theology, practice of indulgences and their meaning for person’s life. However, the issue of the impact of the practice indulgences on the consequences of the past, present and future of those seeking to gain indulgences has not yet been directly addressed. Therefore, the aim of this article is an attempt to show how asking for indulgences can actually change consequences of our “yesterday” and our “today” and “tomorrow”. The reflection will be focused mainly on the definition of the indulgence and necessary conditions for obtaining the indulgence. The study will be summed up with conclusions and suggestions for further reflection on the relationship between indulgences and human life.
