Summary/Abstract: Torbalı, which is the largest town in İzmir's Küçük Menderes basin has a history of approximately one hundred and sixty years if ancient times are excluded. The railway line, which opened between İzmir and Torbalı in 1860, increased the importance of Torbalı, which had previously been a small village, and the urbanization process began. The settlements named Kızılhisar and Tiryanda, which were named to the area where Torbalı was located until the 19th century lost both their administrative and human importance over time and were defeated by time. Torbalı’s administrative borders, which gained the status of a township during the Ottoman Empire period and district during the early years of the republic, have changed dramatically over the last 160 years. The location and administrative boundaries of the city center changed throughout the 20th century; there were some villages left Torbalı and were connected to Torbalı, and the dispersed villages ceased to be administrative units. This study, which focuses on the change in Torbalı's administrative division, is also related to the history of five other districts of İzmir today. Because border changes took place between Torbalı and Menderes, Kemalpaşa, Buca, Bayındır, and Tire districts, and village shopping occurred as a result of the administrative changes. Yearbooks, statistical annuals, and provincial annuals were used as primary sources, in addition to archival documents, and the sources were critically evaluated. It is also emphasized that statistical comparisons without taking into account the changes in administrative divisions, may lead researchers to incorrect conclusions.
