A GROUP OF HEALING BOWL FOUND IN ISTANBUL TOMBS MUSEUM

Summary/Abstract: Healing bowls are small works of art adorned with verses, numbers and letters written on them and various symbols loaded with iconographic meanings to get rid of various diseases and troubles. In addition to being evaluated within the scope of art history in terms of material, ornamentation and quality, healing bowls also have an important place in the discipline of folklore in terms of reflecting folk belief when prayer, verse and motif features are taken into account. In this study, a group of healing bowls belonging to the last periods of the Ottoman Empire in the Istanbul Tombs Museum were examined within the framework of the discipline of art history. In order not to fall into repetition, 15 bowls were included in the study, taking into account the form and ornamental features of the works. The artifacts discussed are divided into three groups in terms of form, with a central part, without a hub, and bowls with a small bowl in the middle. The writings on the healing bowls, which have an important place in the metal art, were read and the verses and ornaments on the bowls were tried to be evaluated. In these small vessels, in which inscriptions were engraved as intensely as the bottom, starting from the rim for their functions; It was understood that geometric, vegetal and, to a lesser extent, architectural depictions were included. The place of the healing bowls produced by the casting technique from brass mine, especially in Turkish Islamic art, is emphasized.
