The works of Joseph Roth

Summary/Abstract: The present study tackles the Habsburg myth and the myth of nation-states in relation to the works of Joseph Roth. The general introduction, which briefly summarizes the historical background of the age and draws parallels between past and present, is followed by a clarification of theoretical concepts. The study used in the paper is interdisciplinary in nature, combining literary and social science, historical and psychological aspects. In the practical part, based on the selected works by Roth the paper examines the presence and absence of the two myths. These concepts often appear in the works without being explicitly mentioned. Roth’s works point to the foundations of the myths and testify to the importance of humanity in the midst of a political, social, cultural cavalcade. The author and his heroes are real world citizens, border crossers.
