Summary/Abstract: Evidentials indicate the information source on which the speaker’s claim is based; this source may be e.g. direct observation, inference, someone’s report or others. Additionally, evidentials may also encode epis- temic and/or other meanings connected with the speaker’s attitude to the information content. The paper assumes a broad definition of evidentiality: its markers may be grammatical morphemes, but also syntactic means or lexical resources. The aim of the paper is to analyze the evidential values encoded by select percep- tion verbs in Polish and their impersonal forms/predicatives, as it is often indirect evidence that is encoded by such forms. In the final part, the paper addresses the question of whether any of the forms discussed might be regarded as evidentiality in the early process of grammaticalization.
