Summary/Abstract: In this research, the distinctive features of hedges are presented from a theoretical aspect, while the practical analysis of the corpus revolves around two major points: (1) politeness as a possible addition to the Cooperative Principle, (2) the quality maxim as the most frequently hedged of Yule’s maxims. The corpus consists of 436 hedging expressions marked in the transcripts of 14 movie dialogues. The analysis of the corpus and the classification of hedges are based primarily on Yule’s categorization from 1996, following Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975).
