CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIVATE ART MUSEUMS TO THE CHANGE AND RENEWAL PROCESS OF TURKISH ARTWORK

Summary/Abstract: Museums can be cited as institutions that best reflect the culture, lifestyles, and values of societies, capable of transmitting these values to future generations, and also providing educational opportunities. These values have gained significant importance through museums over the past century, and societies have attached importance to the concepts of museums and museology in order to reflect their own cultures and lifestyles. In this context, it is believed that private art museums reflect these values. The history of museology, the development and transformation process of museum culture in Turkey, the functions of private art museums, and the contributions of private art museums to Turkish painting art constitute the problem statement of this study. For this purpose, the Mustafa Ayaz Foundation and Plastic Arts Museum, IMOGA Istanbul Graphic Arts Museum, and Baksi Cultural Art Foundation Museum have been selected as the subjects of the research. The reason for limiting the study to these three museums is that they have been established by master artists who have emerged within the realm of art. The conducted study is based on qualitative research, and data has been obtained through literature review and interview method. Semi-structured interview forms were used during the interviews with artists. It has been found that the museums under investigation have a positive impact on the cultural and artistic life as well as nourishing art education and society in various ways. Considering all these perspectives, it is believed that museums, as institutions that can change and renew a society, support the transformation of Turkish painting art.
