Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the problem of the growing intensity of road traffic in Bulgaria, caused by the provision of the European Transport Network (TEN-T) for domestic and international transport. The classic understanding of transport infrastructure in the 21st century is evolving due to the outpacing increase in the number of cars and the lagging development of transport infrastructure. This lag is most noticeable on the roads of northern Bulgaria, where delayed public investment in highways and highways, along with increasing transit traffic through northern border checkpoints on the Danube are the basis for justifying the relevance of the study. The problematic nature of the development is also supported by the direct connection of the damages on the car fleet in case of traffic accidents, incl. the loss of human lives where the transport network is lagging behind, as evidenced by research in the field of motor insurance. The aim of the study is to establish, based on the data from the State Automobile Administration and the toll system, the current trends in traffic intensity in northern Bulgaria from the border checkpoints connected to the two bridges near Ruse and Vidin and the functioning ferries near Oryahovo and Nikopol. As a result of the study, conclusions are drawn in support of the financial and economic justification for new investments in the TEN-T network in northern Bulgaria.
