Summary/Abstract: This article examines the innovation process in the nuclear sector, focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs) and the prospects for their implementation in the electricity markets. The technical and economic advantages of SMRs stem from their ability to be built faster and cheaper than standard reactors, their ability to provide flexible generation by operating in a "load following" and the wider range of options for closing the fuel cycle. The compact design and lower power output make SMPs an adequate choice for electricity markets which are not characterized by high growth in electricity consumption. This paper focuses on the possibilities for alternative use of the Belene NPP site through the construction of a SMR complex that will perform functions both for the operation of the national electricity system and for electricity and heat supply to households and businesses in the region.
