Summary/Abstract: During most of the XVIIIth century, the policies of change and transformation in the direction of westernisation, which were mostly limited to the military sphere but grew in scope towards the end of the century, gained a total character with the Tanzimat. This situation gave a civilian dimension to westernisation, which was almost entirely led by statesmen and envisaged changes in state institutions, after the mid-XIXth century. Thus, Beyoğlu became the centre of alafrangalism, which meant being like Europeans with their attitudes and behaviours, appearance and lifestyle. The inhabitants of the neighbourhoods on the opposite side of the Golden Horn, on the other hand, continued to live their traditional lives, taking responsibility with their lives and property in the country's difficult times. Thus, two different Istanbuls were formed: Alafranga Istanbul and alaturka Istanbul. This research focuses on Beyoğlu, which represents Alfranga Istanbul, and aims to reveal what happened in Beyoğlu under the name of westernisation.
