Summary/Abstract: Lozanka Peycheva continues her multi-year in-depth research on the process of creation, functioning and role of what are defined as “author’s songs in people’s spirit” / “author’s songs based on folklore”. The result is another book of hers, “The People’s Spirit” in author’s songs from Bulgaria” (Narodniyat duh v avtorskite pesni ot Bulgaria). The text is the first complete and holistic scientific achievement on the subject. It explores a “modern, multifaceted and diverse phenomenon”. Lozanka Peycheva examines “a history of the displacement of tradition by modernity” on the basis of the constructed phenomenon “narodna muzika” (people’s music). The musical characteristics of this phenomenon, which is both a commodity and part of soft power, are shown. The author observes these processes in a long period of transformations and functionality – from the middle of the XIX to the beginning of the XXI century. The first part is entitled “Terminological and typological dimensions”. It examines the essence of author’s songs in a folk spirit according to the proposed systematization. In the second part, “Historical dimensions”, the author’s songs in folk spirit are shown and systematized in the context of different periods of Bulgarian history – from the 19th century to today, i.e. in the stage of the modern Bulgarian musical culture. The observed phenomenon is considered in four sub-periods. Among the merits of the book, I would note the extremely rich and varied empirical material on which the conclusions are based. Multi-focal research and thick description is another important achievement of Lozanka Peycheva. Through her book, she rethinks the phenomenon of authors’ songs in folk spirit in its processuality and changeability. It also presents it as an indicator of the changing Bulgarian society.
