THE CHURCH SLAVIC ELEMENTS IN THE RUTHENIAN LANGUAGE

Summary/Abstract: The Church Slavic language was used as a literary language before the Ruthenians’ settlement in Bačka. Since their moving into Bačka in the mid-18th century cultural and national life of the Ruthenians was based on the connections with the Carpathian region from where the first priests and teachers came. Church Slavic has left some traces and the paper deals with them. The paper provides several examples from the church sphere (record books, church board minutes, spiritual songs and others). In addition, the paper describes the present use of the Church Slavic language in Greek Catholic churches among the Ruthenians in Bačka and Srem today. Religion culture has traditionally been one of the most important elements of the Ruthenian national being and the Church Slavic language has been preserved in Greek Catholic liturgy as an indivisible part of it. The paper enables to understand the language situation which lead to the codified literary Ruthenian language at the beginning of the 20th century and the existence of the Church-Slavic elements in modern Ruthenian at the beginning of the 21st century.
