Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the concept of the North in Gogol’s Dead Souls. We have identified a network of motifs which is connected to several codes containing infernal representations of the North: a general mythological one (folklore-demonological, biblical), apocryphal with texts of secondary folk tales. A special emphasis is laid on the identity between the North and Russia, and the North - South axis, connected with the so called "Kherson plot" in the novel.
