Summary/Abstract: In addition to differences in body proportions, muscular development, adipose layer formation, skeletal structure or hair pattern, vocal colour and laryngeal structure are secondary sex characteristics that constitute a set of somatic and functional differences between women and men. This article discusses the position, size and structure of the larynx in men and women and their influence on vocal traits/differences; chest capacity and type of breathing; the use of the chest and head resonator and their influence on the female and male voice; excessive audio‑phonatory reflex and its influence on the voice; raising voice intensity due to noise; changes in the endocrine system and their influence on vocal traits/differences in women; and ageing of the body, including the vocal apparatus.
