Summary/Abstract: The following research makes a new lecture of the beginning of Letopisețul Cantacuzinesc (The Cantacuzino Chronicle), written around 1690–1720 in Wallachia by combining parts of older text, written in Slavonic, but later also in Romanian. It discusses only the first two very short narrative parts, two legends offering different versions of the story of the founding of the Wallachian state: the so‑called legend of the Bassarabs and the legend of Negru Vodă. The first one seems to be written sometimes between the end of the 13thand the beginning of the 14th century, the second one gives hints to be placed around the middle of the 15th century.
