Summary/Abstract: The University of Maribor Library set its basic direction, i.e. being closely connected with the mission and goals of the university and the library's goal is to participate in all the processes of the university's strategic planning. The 21st century demands of the libraries to constantly check the realisation of its basic values, goals and mission, though we must not forget the preservation of the heritage for the next generations. The article discusses the world librarianship development trends that the University of Maribor tries to implement in its activities. The support role of a library for the educational and research work at the university, where the role of a subject specialist is changing, is presented. The article also presents a subject specialist’s help with the information literacy; the digital library and permanent archiving of the academic heritage as well as the promotion of the open access to information. A library as a social space, designed for the library services’ users, is also discussed. Precondition for the professional changes is a flexible organisational structure, which is in the University of Maribor Library being introduced at the moment.
