Summary/Abstract: Istvan Denes (1954-2005) is “an outsider” in Palaeolithic archaeology, but an undisputed figure in research on the karst region in southeastern Transylvania. His speleological activity is primarily linked to the karst area of the Vârghiş Gorges. I. Denes paid special attention to recording archaeological material and identifying the sources of raw materials used by Palaeolithic hunters. Thus, we can say that we are facing a rare situation in archaeological endeavours: the results of investigations conducted by a researcher with foreign training in the field of archaeology illustrate, in many aspects, an approach of remarkable professionalism.
