Summary/Abstract: The best known Romanian cultural association form the territories that were under foreign rule was Asociaţiunea transilvană pentru literatura română şi cultura poporului român („Astra”), founded in 1861 at Sibiu. It was conducted by a General Assembly, which established the main directions of action and the executive board. In the Banat, Astra had seven general assemblies, the last being organised in 1937 in Timişoara as a recognition of the efforts made by the local organisation. By comparison with other general assemblies that were orgaised in the interbellum period, and which were the stage for some bitter political confrontations, the assembly in Timişoara, although organised around the same date as the last parliamentary elections organised in Greater Romania, was one of the most peaceful meetings that were organised in Banat.
