Summary/Abstract: Starting with individuals installed in the main municipal captain office, the progressive building of the state police in Uzhhorod culminated with its nationalisation, many other personnel changes, and material modernisation. The entire process did not evade various scandals, at first caused by the Hungarian staff resistance and later by the failure of the installed or hired employees. Overcoming the Hungarian heritage and setting the system in which the policeman is ‘not only a good and loyal guard of the law, but also a guide and friend of people who induces full public confidence’ was one of the main tasks of the new security corps that was declared by its members. The success of the entire process is evidenced by its recognition by the state police expert consultant, i.e. the gendarmerie that acknowledged in the mid-1920s that the Police Directorate in Uzhhorod provided sufficient security in their town.
