Summary/Abstract: The focal point of the article pertains to the novella Thirty-three Monsters of Lydia Zinovieva-Annibal, with the intention of scrutinizing its classification within the literary genre of the povest’. Firstly, we illustrate the diverse possibilities that this genre bestows upon the author, and we review the main characteristics by juxtaposing the povest' to the French novella (nouvelle). Secondly, we are intrigued by the writer's innovative approach to exploiting on the possibilities offered by the povest' in this piece of literature. Indeed, the writer presents a reflective aspect by employing the diary narrative, and then a dramatic or even theatrical dimension, as evidenced by the indication of a tragic register throughout the work. The omnipresence of dialogue in the text and the introduction of the tragic register leads us to consider the work as a theatrical work, and at the same time distances us from the satirical and comic interpretation of the text, which is predominant in current research. By focusing on these literary devices, we argue that it is possible to take a fresh look at this central work in the author's artistic career.
