Summary/Abstract: As a consequence of the Russian Action Help, thousands of immigrants from the former Russian Empire arrived in Czechoslovakia. But only a few of them could enrol in Czechoslovak universities or finish studies interrupted due to the Russian civil war. The study deals with the Russian immigrants who received medical education in Czechoslovakia. But for several reasons, they could not practice medicine there. The first condition for admission to study programmes was to sign a ‘discharge’ that voluntarily renounced all job opportunities in Czechoslovakia after the completion of studies. The second issue was a long-term conflict between the Czechoslovak Medical Chamber with foreign medical students and foreign physicians who received a special permit from the Czechoslovak Ministry of Health that enabled them to practice medicine there. The local doctors viewed it as an unfair preference of foreigners over locals. The Russian physicians’ situation further deteriorated as a consequence of the economic crisis and the adoption of Law no. 114/1929 of the Coll. on medical practice. In 1933, the Czechoslovak Medical Chamber moreover adopted a resolution on the use of hospital cash registers that restricted the rights of foreign physicians and even those who were granted Czechoslovak citizenship.
