The Description by Emil Zegadłowicz and Czesław Miłosz of Landscapes in Their Homecountries

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the description in this article are the names of natural elements (single words and word associations), in the worlds presented in Dolina Issy [Issa Valley] by Czesław Miłosz and Godzina przed Jutrznią [An Hour before Matins] by Emil Zegadłowicz. The names allow the reconstruction of the literary and linguistic image of nature (as a fragment of the broadly understood linguistic image of the world) within the homecountries of the characters (vel the authors) of the both novels. The route taken by Mikołaj Srebrempisany between Wołkowice (real-life Wadowice) and his family home in Poręba Murowana (real-life Gorzeń Górny) becomes a contribution to the description of the nature of Beskid Mały. The elements of nature from the Kaunas region (from near Issa, real-life Niewiaża) are seen through the eyes of Tomasz Surkont via the prism of two seasons: spring and autumn. The two authors use, inter alia, metaphors and the anthropomorphisation of nature in the novel’s descriptions. Zegadłowicz not only describes, but also praises the world of mountains in which he spent his childhood. Miłosz idealizes and mythologizes the image of his homecountries.
