Summary/Abstract: On 3 September 1939 in Bydgoszcz, when some units of the “Pomorze” (Pomerania) Army were retreating through the city, a German sabotage mission was carried out. An important aspect of those events which has not been researched yet is the role of the Polish civil self-defence units in Bydgoszcz, whose structures began to be formed at the end of August 1939, so actually before the outbreak of the Polish-German war. Bydgoszcz was, next to Katowice, one of the largest Polish cities where civil self-defence structures were set up on such a scale, and which, at the beginning of September 1939, both cooperated with the army, and acted independently, serving as civil guard. On 3 and 4 September 1939 these groups, partly organized and armed by the military, participated actively in the events in Bydgoszcz and after that some of them left the city. The following article makes a contribution to the further research both on the Bydgoszcz events of 3–4 September 1939 and on the – barely investigated so far – issue of the Polish irregular actions in September 1939, organized upon military initiative and relying on the reservists of the Polish Army that had not been called up, as well as on the members of veteran’s associations and youth before the age conscription.
