Summary/Abstract: The article shows the changes in the conceptions of truth and discusses the views of ancient philosophers, Church Fathers, scholastics, Descartes, and phenomenologists on truth. It analyses the relationship between truth and faith in early Christianity and describes the theory of Illuminism, which states that the mind, illuminated by divine light, sees the truth. It reveals that in the 13th century, Thomas Aquinas, building on the teachings of Aristotle, applied the theory of abstraction to cognition, replacing the doctrine of Illuminism. It is shown that by the end of the Middle Ages, scholasticism was turning towards nominalism, the theory which states that the only reality is the reality of individual things. The beginning of modern culture is associated with Descartes. He revealed the relationship between Being and thinking with the formula cogito ergo sum. In the 20th century, with the phenomenological movement, there was a return to Cartesian truth and its manifestations in the ontology of play.
