Summary/Abstract: This article describes a corpus study that focuses on the similarities and differences in the combinatorial possibilities of the opposite adjectives rijk (rich) and arm (poor) in Dutch and their equivalents bohatý and chudý in Czech. First, special attention is paid to collocations formed with these adjectives and nouns. Next, combinations with a preposition, similes and compounds with these adjectives are compared. The results of this contrastive research are based on the extraction of the aforementioned word combinations from the most extensive Dutch and Czech written corpora, namely the Corpus Hedendaags Nederlands and the SYN, version 10. This corpus study shows that a large number of collocations are identical. However, differences were found in the frequency of these collocations and in the combinatorial possibilities of the adjectives. The use of similes and combinations with a fixed preposition is comparable in both languages. The biggest differences were observed in the case of compounds.
