Rice Production and Trade in Bulgarian Lands in the 15th—19th Century

Summary/Abstract: The problem of rice production and trade in Bulgarian lands in the 15th –19th centuries is not new for Bulgarian economic history. However, there has been relatively insufficient research of the problem in its entirety. The current research aims to introduce and summarize all (with a few exceptions) published and accessible historical documents concerning the issue, taking into account available monographs, even those indirectly related to the topic. The author’s aim was to contribute in the clarifying of rice production and trade by analyzing and reviewing the available evidence scattered in historical and economic literature on the topic of his interest, as well as to arrive at a number of conclusions about the effects of that production and trade and their place in commodity-monetary and land relations, in compulsory state deliveries and the purposes for which they were assigned.
