DEVELOPING READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS USING NON-LITERARY TEXTS

Summary/Abstract: Reading literacy is an essential tool for all people, yet the number of functional illiterates is alarmingly high. Functional illiteracy is the term used to describe people who, although they can read and write, are too overwhelmed to understand and interpret texts. To prevent or at least reduce this phenomenon, we designed a development program for primary school pupils that uses non-literary texts and different strategies to develop their reading literacy at this age. Our research, although conducted with a relatively small number of subjects, was found to be relevant on the basis of various measures, as our hypothesis that processing non-literary texts significantly improves students text comprehension skills was found to be true across several measures. These measurements were obtained using different research methods, such as experiments, observations, and questionnaire surveys. The limitations of our research include the relatively small number of participants and the time frame for the research; however, the results are still encouraging enough to open up new and wider avenues in the hope of even better results.
