Summary/Abstract: The student sports movement was established in academic centres in Po-land during the partitions. Due to the political situation, the fate of sports organizations created by students was not easy. The aim of the article is to present the legal basis of the sports activity of Polish students in the interwar period and the struggle for the autonomy of the Academic Sports Association. After regaining independence, sports activities were subject to a varied legal status and only unified by the Law on Associations of 1932. The statute of the Krakow Academic Sports Association was a model for student sports organizations established in subsequent cities, and the legal regulation of student sports clubs was not the same as the provisions on which the association movement was based. In the interwar period, student associations were established based on the Act on Academic Schools and were subject to ministerial and university supervision. Rigorous regulations made it difficult to participate in national sports competitions, inter-university activities, and limited autonomy.
