Around the mysterious document of Juan de Cardona (State Archive in Poznań)

Summary/Abstract: This article solves the mystery of the missing half of a 15th century parchment document, owned by the State Archive in Poznań. The original document is identified here as a letter of indulgence issued by bailiff Juan de Cardona pursuant to the power of attorney of the pope Sixtus IV during the papal campaign aiming at collecting funds to protect Rhodes and launch an armed action against the Turks. The article describes the campaign and the role of Catalan Juan de Cardona in the campaign. It also provides examples of letters of indulgence issued back then, which were used as a template to reconstruct the missing half of the letter.
