Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the efforts made by the political class in the Old Kingdom of Romania to create public pre-school institutions, as a part of the cultural homogenization and the nation-building process. Drawing from the retirement files of the kindergarten teachers who started working during the first decades of the twentieth century in foreign communities, the study reveals their professional trajectories and the school policies they were expected to follow in working with small children. The second part of the article argues that there was a connection between the ethnically diverse geographical area located between the Danube River and the Black Sea and the important cultural role played by kindergarten teachers. Including provinces such as Dobruja, Cadrilater and the Southern part of Bessarabia this area was defined by a mixed population, with different ethnic origins, confessional and cultural backgrounds. It was therefore perceived as in need of cultural and linguistic nationalization, thus being intimately linked with the career paths of some of the kindergarten teachers analysed in this study.
