Summary/Abstract: The article attempts 1) to substantiate the relevance of applying the principle of stylistic binarity, although has been criticized since Alois Riegl’s time, to the phenomenon of style in the aspect of its historical evolution, 2) to actualize Wölfflin’s five pairs of stylistic oppositions in the field of musical art in general, and not only to the particular eras of the Renaissance and the Baroque, which had already been carried out by scholars a century ago, 3) to compare the implementation of these five pairs interpreted as aesthetic categories in the visual art, for which they were introduced, with that in music to reveal their summarizing capacity.
