Summary/Abstract: In the Motu proprio Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus of August 15, 2015, Francis reminded the diocesan bishops that under can. 383 § 1 of the CIC are obliged to care for separated or divorced spouses. The legislator's concern for easy access to legal and pastoral assistance for divorced spouses is reflected in many initiatives aimed at accompanying such people on their way of life and facilitating their access to court. The Italian archdioceses of Trani–Barletta–Bisceglie and Pescara–Penne are examples of useful initiatives to help divorced spouses discern their life situation and to assist them in bringing proceedings for annulment of their marriage. Valuable institutional forms of helping these spouses have been undertaken there.
